Rebels With A Cause
a film by Helen Garvy
Who were the student protestors of the 1960s? Students For A Democratic Society (SDS) was the largest American student protest group of the 1960s, at one time boasting 400 college chapters across the country. Best known for protesting the war in Vietnam, they also worked with SNCC to combat racism and poverty in the South and protested Chase Manhattan Bank's involvement in aparthied in South Africa. This film, with commentary by various SDS members such as Tom Hayden, Carl Oglesby, Alice Embree, Junius Williams, Bill Ayers, Cathy Wilkerson and Bernadine Dohrn, explores the inception and evolution of SDS from a small group of activists to a nationwide movement.
Following the film, Guest Speaker Naida Tushnet, founding member of the Columbia University chapter of SDS, will share her perspective on this astounding era.
